About the Play: "Doubt" is John Patrick Shanley’s 2005 Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play that presents the confrontation between emotional conviction and proof. It is set in 1964, at St. Nicolas Catholic Elementary School in the Bronx, during the political uncertainty surrounding Kennedy’s assassination and the doctrinal uncertainty of Vatican II.

Sister Aloysius, the strict, traditionalist principal, learns from Sister James, an eager, young teacher, that Father Flynn, the more liberal parish priest, has met in private with the school’s first and only black student, who is new to the school. With moral certainty that Father Flynn has molested the boy, but without proof, she challenges the male-dominated hierarchy of the church to remove Father Flynn from the school. Their battle, complicated by the boy’s vulnerable position in his own family, finally casts doubt not only on the priest’s reputation and the motives of the church but on the fundamental integrity of the nun’s faith.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
Sister Aloysius Beauvier: (50-70) Devoutly bound to traditional religious and social values, she sees herself as brutally realistic and undeviating in her duty.
• Father Brendan Flynn: (30 – 45) Young at heart, articulate, personable, he resists practices and people that have grown rigid.
• Sister James: (20 – 25) Enthusiastic though inexperienced as a teacher, she is sincere but naïve, thus easily swayed and confused by her superiors.
• Mrs. Muller: (35 – 45) The mother of the school’s first black student, she is carefully determined that her son will survive all that seems determined to destroy him.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
