Theater Cats Are Seeing a Show!

Although Cause 4 Paws is an all-volunteer organization, it still costs money to rescue a stray cat – vet bills, food and medication all require cash. So at the Thursday, October 15 performance of BUYER AND CELLAR, Cause 4 Paws is teaming up with the Theater Project—50% of the ticket price will go to Cause 4 Paws when patrons use the code C4P.

Cause 4 Paws, Inc. is a small, all-volunteer feline rescue group, in existence for almost 14 years, and has already found homes for over 2,500 orphaned cats. Two of those cats are now living with Theater Project artistic director Mark Spina. “Cause4Paws is always looking for temporary foster homes for stray kittens and cats until permanent homes can be found, so I volunteered to take them in for a short time, but I couldn’t let them go. The technical term for me is ‘foster failure’.” It was his connection to the group’s mainstays, Christine Wagner and Diane Carl, that led to the collaboration of the BUYER AND CELLAR benefit performance.

“We’re holding a reception before the show,” says Diane. “We hope people will come early, socialize, learn a little more about C4P, and then enjoy the performance. If we fill the house, we can make over $1000.” That’s a lot of cat food. Learn more about the group’s work at http://www.c4prescue.org .

BUYER AND CELLAR, a hit in New York and New Brunswick, is now being produced by The Theater Project in Maplewood, NJ. Jonathan Tolins’ play imagines a young out-of-work actor fortunate enough to get the dream job of keeping Barbra Streisand’s private underground shopping mall organized and ready for its only customer –- but can he resist the temptation to say “Hello, Gorgeous?”

Jason Gillis Jason Gillis plays the young actor and all the people he encounters “down below” including the great one herself. New to New Jersey, Jason has been acting steadily with area companies since graduating from Kean University. When he is not acting or dancing, Jason is the Education Program Manager at Paper Mill Playhouse. He is pictured here holding Mr.C, the companion of the show’s director David Christopher, who has been acting and directing in New Jersey theaters for over 40 years (Christopher, not the cat).

tpphoto BUYER AND CELLAR is the final production of THREE PLAYS IN THREE WEEKS, an entire season of entertainment delivered in less than one month by The Theater Project, the professional theater company at the Burgdorff Center in Maplewood. The Theater Project also offers programs such as workshops and presentations with professional playwrights, and classes for kids in theater, juggling and music, in Cranford, Maplewood and Union.
