The Chatham Players will hold auditions for John Van Druten’s play, “Bell, Book and Candle” on Tuesday, February 28th and Wednesday, March 1st at 7:30 pm. All auditions will occur at The Chatham Playhouse 23 North Passaic Ave. Production dates are May 5 thru May 20, 2017 with rehearsals to begin early-March. Elizabeth Rogers directs.
Set in the late 1950’s NYC, Bell Book and Candle centers around Gillian Holroyd, a modern-day witch. She casts a spell over an unattached publisher, Shepherd Henderson, partly to keep him away from a rival, partly because she is bored, and partly because she is attracted to him. He immediately falls head over heels in love with her and soon wants to marry her. But, witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love. If they do, they lose their powers. This tiny complication leads to a number of difficulties. As truths are told and tempers flare, Gillian is surprised to discover that she has fallen in love, but is it too late?
Director Rogers seeks three men / two women to fill out her cast. Auditions will consist of cold readings from sides provided, which can be found on Chatham Players’ website. To access sides and the audition form, please visit our website at http://www.chathamplayers.org/auditions.html .
Gillian Holroyd (25-35) Intelligent, sophisticated woman who is also a practicing witch. She is the landlord of a Murray Hill brownstone where she, her Aunt Queenie, and Shep Henderson live. Gillian experiences a major personality transformation during the play. Must be comfortable with on-stage kissing.
Shep Henderson (28-40) A gentleman, a successful NY publisher, a hard-working man who is ready to get on with the next phase of a “successful” life…marriage. Despite being under a powerful love spell, Shep occasionally senses that something unorthodox is happening. Must be comfortable with on-stage kissing.
Aunt Queenie Holroyd (50+) Gillian’s Aunt, also a witch, although not as powerful as Gillian. She is slightly eccentric and a bit mischievous. She loves her magic and has fun using it.
Nick Holroyd (25-35) Gillian’s brother. Charming, bright, with an easy manner and always ready for a party or a prank. Condescending toward mortals, but enjoys their company.
Sidney Redlitch (40+) Author of a book about witchcraft containing just enough truth that is clear he has some insights into this hidden world. He is an outsider and groupie, who thrives on being “in the know”. He is aware he will never be fully part of the witchy world and that lends him a slight air of desperation. He is always a little rumpled and often a little tipsy.
