Not all the barriers separating communities are on a map. Borderless – the thematic series by Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) – continues with an innovative performance that breaks down boundaries separating generations through dance and movement.
I know You by Freespace Dance, a Montclair-based contemporary dance company, explores how shared experiences, thoughts and emotions enable individuals of all ages to form connections. The piece is performed by a multigenerational cast of 16 dancers – ranging in ages from 15 to 65 – and portrays through movement, the many ways different generations interact and create together.
I know You by Freespace Dance is presented by Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) on Saturday March 4/7:30pm at Merseles Studios, 339 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07302.
Borderless – the new series by JCTC that runs through March – brings a diverse array of new and emerging voices to audiences with a comprehensive range of art, theater, readings and performances.
I know You features and is choreographed by Donna Scro-Samori, Artistic Director of Freespace Dance, who toured professionally as a dance artist for more than 20 years. Scro-Samori conceived of I know You as a way to encourage audiences to overcome preconceptions about age, dance and artistic expression. “The current direction of my work is about expanding the boundaries of what we consider a dancer to be,” she said. “I am interested in the varied artistic expression of movement at any age.”
I Know You premiered in 2015 at in Montclair and beginning in June, will be performed in other venues throughout the region. Reviving this thought-provoking and groundbreaking performance for the Borderless series is an added bonus for this New Jersey dancer and choreographer. "I am very excited that JCTC is bringing I know You to Merseles Studios,” said Scro-Samori. “At times, it can be difficult to find venues that support New Jersey artists, so to be able to present in Jersey City, a vibrant, cultured, and artistic community is exciting. As a New Jersey artist, it is important to me and my company to work and perform in New Jersey. I believe that more venues should look in their own backyard for talented artists. New Jersey is filled with them."
In her two decade plus experience as a dancer and choreographer, Scro-Samor (photo) has performed at The Paris Opera House, Theatre de la Ville, the American Dance Festival (Korea and North Carolina), Spoleto Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, The Egg, the Joyce Theater, The New Victory Theater, Central Park Summer Stage, Symphony Space, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, and Lincoln Center Out of Doors. Prior to establishing Freespace Dance, Scro-Samori was a principal dancer with the Nikolais and Murray Louis Dance Company and a founding member of the Sean Curran Company. She received a 2008 Fellowship from New Jersey State Council on the Arts, for excellence in choreography.
