Surflight Theatre seeks a General Manager


Surflight Theatre seeks a General Manager responsible for leading the organization and building an effective team, this role reports to the Board of Trustees. 

The General Manager is responsible for generating, directing and supervising the day-to-day administration of the Theatre.  In consultation with the Artistic Director and the Board of Trustees, the General Manager is responsible for developing and implementing a budget for all of the Theatre’s production and educational endeavors: these include main stage productions, Children’s Theatre, concerts and special events, Surflight Stars education programs, Surflight to Go touring company and Show Place Ice Cream Parlor.


  • Leads the strategic direction of the Theatre in collaboration with the Artistic Director and the Board of Trustees.

  • Works closely with the Board Treasurer and Artistic Director to create a detailed operational budget and in doing so must evaluate the impact of programmatic decisions on other financial and institutional priorities.

  • Responsible for monthly financial reporting including current financial results, budget performance forecasting, accurate cash flow projections and balance sheet.

  • Responsible for overseeing all capital related spending and acquisitions.

  • Develops contingency budgets and strategies as needed to respond to changing economic conditions.

  • Responsible for leading a multi-functional team including artistic and technical personnel, office staff, Marketing, Facilities and Development Directors.

  • Hires and supervises administrative staff and directs administrative operations.  Exercises responsible stewardship of all resources and ensures distribution and allocation of resources for optimum balance of artistic quality, financial strength and institutional integrity.

  • Creates an environment that inspires open communication, teamwork and a culture of respect.  Serves as a model of leadership, enthusiasm and good humor.

  • Ensures that all human resource policies are maintained and adhered to by all those working to support the Theatre.

  • Builds a robust development program by engaging with development staff in the pursuit of grants, by active solicitation of major donors, and participating in the development and presentation of fund raising vents.

  • Works with the Marketing Director to create a multi-media marketing program.

  • Works with Education Director and Artistic Director to set direction for educational programs.

  • Participates on staff and Board committees as necessary.

  • Ensures job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held and sound human resource policies are in place.

  • Supervises the maintenance of written procedures for technical and production staff.


  • Demonstrated track record of leadership, innovation and artistic vision founded on experience in a broad range of theatrical endeavors.

  • Knowledge and experience regarding the principals, techniques and aspects of  budget development and management.

  • Clear, cordial and personable style of communication.

  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to multi-task and manage diverse personalities and production styles in a fast paced theatrical environment.

  • Team management and building skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with the Board of Trustees and Artistic Director to balance artistic preferences with financial practicalities of running a business.


The job of General Manager requires residency either within Beach Haven or within close proximity as becoming well known in the Beach Haven and Long Beach Island Community is critically important to the success of the role and the Theatre.

Surflight Theatre is a 450 seat regional equity theatre that was established in 1950 and is entering its 65th year.  Its mission is to provide quality regional theatre for residents and visitors to Long Beach Island and surrounding communities, in an environment that emphasizes the education, training and growth of young and emerging artists who seek to cultivate the craft of live theatre.
