First time opera company nominated for 2016 People’s Choice Awards

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, has been nominated for the first time as Favorite Opera Company in the 2016 People’s Choice Awards.

For eight years, the annual awards program, which is run by Discover Jersey Arts, pays tribute to the work of New Jersey’s vital, vibrant and diverse arts organizations. Arts enthusiasts are invited to vote online and submit the ballots for their favorite New Jersey arts organizations.

“The People's Choice Award is a great honor, and we are incredibly grateful the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera has been nominated. We hope new opera lovers will join us during 2016. Winning the award would give the company a distinctive place in the greater New Jersey cultural art scene," said Artistic Director Lucine Amara (photo).

The New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, the house opera company of the Bergen Performing Arts Center, and other contenders in the 2016 People’s Choice Awards were nominated by their peers through the Jersey Arts Marketers network, comprised of hundreds of nonprofit arts groups across the state.

The opera company, known for its grand productions and training the stars of tomorrow, is among 10 arts districts and 100 organizations—the greatest number of nominees the Awards has received since its creation in 2008—that will compete in 16 categories, including favorite performing arts center, opera company, dance company, art gallery, choral group and more.

“We have seen the number of nominees grow again this year, which truly illustrates the breadth of art we have in our state and the desire these groups have to see one another thrive,” said Adam Perle, President & CEO of ArtPride New Jersey, the cosponsors of the Discover Jersey Arts program with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. “The quality of art we have here is ever burgeoning thanks to our amazing cultural community working together to build each other up.”

Public voting began January 6 and continues through February 11, 2016. Winners will be announced and honored in early March at the New Jersey Conference on Tourism in Atlantic City.

For over a quarter century, the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera has been an integral part of the region’s classical music culture. Led by Metropolitan Opera luminary Lucine Amara, Verismo Opera delivers a rich, grand opera experience for performers and viewers.

As the Bergen Performing Arts Center's house opera company, Verismo Opera provides performing opportunities for young musicians and artists through its semi-annual productions at the theatre and concerts held in community settings. Community members are invited to get involved as supernumeraries and volunteers.

An annual international vocal competition is conducted in November with finals generally drawing artists throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Verismo Opera also organizes opera workshops, master classes and concerts and offers affordable, highly professional productions.
