This version of the play includes the popular sequence Hal and Cathy which was created for the film. Other scenes include Brenda and Jerry, dealing with the lead-up to a seduction, and another, Johnny and Wilma, with a married couple's quarrel. Another, Mike and Susan, deals with a groom getting cold feet the night before his wedding and the last, Bea, Frank, Richie and Joan, with a father and mother struggling to help their son gain confidence about his marriage.

Brenda: Early 20s, attractive, vulnerable, very mod-ish, her glibness is her defensive façade.

Jerry: Late 20s – early 30s, average to handsome man on the make, tries very hard to be smooth but doesn’t quite cut it.

Wilma: Late 30s, a strong attractive girl looking for her femininity.

Johnny: 40-ish, a maybe paunchy, maybe balding, ex-Marine who is fighting a losing battle to maintain his male superiority.

Susan: Early-mid 20s, attractive, sensitive, soft, sweet and passive.

Mike: Late 20s-early 30s, big, energetic, masculine, openly sensitive.

Frank: 45 – 55, strong, stubborn, old-fashioned, not much formal education, second generation American father.

Bea: Female counterpart to Frank.

Richie: Mid 20s, average looking, introspective.

Joan: Mid 20s, pretty, overly romantic and not too bright.

Hal: 50s, having an affair with Cathy who is pressuring him to leave his wife of 32 years.

Cathy: 30s, having an affair for five years with Hal, wants him to leave his wife for her.
