Plot Summary:
Based on the true story of Siamese twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, who became stars during the Depression, SIDE SHOW is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip, whose extraordinary bond brings them fame but denies them love. Told almost entirely in song, the show follows their progression from England to America, around the vaudeville circuit, and to Hollywood on the eve of their appearance in the 1932 movie FREAKS. With musical styles ranging from the vaudevillian "Stuck With You" to the sweepingly emotional "Who Will Love Me as I Am," this gorgeous musical from the composer of DREAMGIRLS will touch your heart and tickle your funny bone.

Character Breakdown:
A Multi-Ethnic/Multi-Racial cast of 22-28 adults. Actors of all ages, genders, sizes, and races are needed. The entire cast/ensemble will sing. Depending on turnout and look, we may split/add more actors focusing on different strengths (dancing/singing/physical strength/acrobatics).
With the exception of Daisy, Violet, Terry, Buddy, and Jake, the cast may double in a number of other featured roles throughout the show (including Tod Browning, the photographers, reporters, vaudevillians, spectators, performers, party guests, and Carny hawkers). The roles listed below are their featured roles in the “Side Show." Actors with special skills -- especially jumps and acrobatics -- are a plus.

Daisy Hilton*: Female. Able to play 20-35 (Alto/Mezzo with belt; big range - E3 - G5 sustained). The dominant and more outspoken of the twins, her dream is to become a famous performer/celebrity.
Violet Hilton*: Female. Able to play 20-35 (Mezzo/Soprano with belt; big range - Eb3 - F#5). The shy and more composed of the twins, her dream is to marry and raise a family at home.
* NOTE: Since the Hilton sisters were conjoined twins attached at the lower spine/hip, actors interested in these roles MUST be comfortable acting, moving, and dancing in tandem with another, and may be paired at the audition or callback with other candidates for scenes and dances. Theatrical convention will be what makes these two sisters identical; the most important factors are acting, range, ability, and compatibility. Additionally, although the Hilton sisters were Caucasian, this production will consider any ethnicity, as the story to be told goes far beyond race.
Terry Conner: Male. Able to play 20-35 (Baritone with strong upper range - F#2 - G4). A talent scout/agent for the Vaudeville circuit. Handsome, smooth, and suave; a leading-man type. Daisy’s love interest. Actor will ballroom dance.
Buddy Foster: Male. Able to play 20-35 (Tenor; big range - F2 - A4). Usher turned Entertainer. Bright and energetic, but a bit naive with a secret to hide. A song and dance man. Violet’s love interest.
Jake: Male. Person of color preferred, able to play 25+ (Tenor/baritone with strong top range - G2 - A4). “Side Show” Foreman. Very strong physical presence even when silent. Secretly in love with Violet. Strong singer who can move well. Athletic build. Jake is also the Cannibal King.
