Synopsis:
1482. Paris, France. Quasimodo, a deformed bell ringer in a cold cathedral tower discovers his inner strength. A conflicted priest battles the specter of damnation. A dashing soldier shuns duty to pursue a beautiful gypsy dancer. And at every turn, a malevolent force propels each of them toward fate. This musical retelling of the beloved medieval love story features a lush score by Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) – the only stage collaboration between the two giants of the American musical theatre.

Preparation:
Prepare a song in the style of the show that most effectively showcases range and vocal ability. Have a (32 bar) cut prepared, but bring the entire song, in case we need to see more.

Accompanist will be provided.

Dance / Movement Auditions will be done at the Call Back – only.

Similarly, reading from sides will only be done at the Call Back.

Breakdown:

QUASIMODO: (Male 20 – 30). Strong Tenor - Bb2 to B5.
Deformed and reclusive, longs to see the outside world, but staunchly loyal to his master, Frollo. Possesses great vulnerability, but covers a deep well of pain and rage. This actor will be physically representing Quasimodo’s deformity (like in “Elephant Man”). Therefore, actors auditioning for this role must be dexterous and flexible.

DOM CLAUDE FROLLO: (Male 40 – 55). Baritone – F2 to F4.
Archdeacon of Notre Dame. A severe man who is convinced of his own goodness and righteousness. Struggles with the conflict between the self denial, required by his religious belief and sexual desire for Esmeralda. This struggle ultimately drives him mad.

ESMERALDA: (Female 20 – 30). Mezzo (belt / mix) – E3 – D5.
A beautiful and free-spirited gypsy who possesses the strong sense of justice and morality that Frollo lacks. Compassionate, she frees Quasimodo from the frenzied mob at the Feast of Fools and, against her better judgment, falls for the cocky Phoebus.

PHOEBUS DE MARTIN: (Male 25 – 35). Tenor – A2 – Ab4.
Returning to Paris after serving in the war, Phoebus takes up his new position as Captain of the Cathedral Guard. Overconfident yet charming, this handsome, strong soldier makes the ladies swoon, yet his moral compass is also strong, and he openly defies the corrupted Frollo.

CLOPIN TROUILLEFOU: (Male 25 – 40). High Tenor – D3 – F#5.
The clever and charismatic King of the Gypsies. An air of mystery surrounds Clopin, who often leaves the scene in a puff of smoke. As the master of ceremonies for the Feast of Fools, he is witty and playful, but he boasts a darker, serious nature when not performing for the crowd.

CONGREGATION: (5 Female & 7 Male Ranging in ages from 20 – 60). Various Voice Types to play Gypsies / Gargoyles / Soldiers / Citizens of Paris AND to act as story tellers.

From the Congregation the following Roles will be cast:

JEHAN FROLLO: (Male 20 – 30). Tenor – F3 – Eb5.
Claude’s reckless younger brother. With the gypsy Florika, he fathers Quasimodo, who he leaves in his brother’s care. Wild, passionate, and strong-willed.

FLORIKA: (Female 20 – 30). Soprano E-4 – F#5.
A gypsy and Quasimodo’s mother.

FATHER DAUPIN: (Male 40 – 60). Baritone C3 – A3.
A priest of Notre Dame and Claude and Jehan’s guardian.

LUTENANT FREDERIC CHARLUS: (Male 20 – 35). Speaking Role.
Lieutenant of the Cathedral Guard and loyal friend to Phoebus.

KING LOUIS XI: (Male 30 – 50). Speaking Role.
King of France, nicknamed the Prudent.

TRIBUNAL: (Male 20 – 45). Baritone G2 – E4.
A Judicial Officer of the Court of King Louis XI.

MADAM: (Female 30 – 50). Speaking Role.
Owner of a brothel and safe haven for gypsies.

ST. SPHRODISIUS: (Male 30 – 50). Bari-Tenor B3 – E4.
A stained-glass image that comes to life.

THE CHOIR: (16 – 24)
Seeking experienced choristers, able to read demanding music very well. Knowledge of proper pronunciation of choral Latin is a plus (but not required).
2 – 3 Soprano 1 (A3 – D6)
2 – 3 Soprano 2 (A3 – B5)
4 – 6 Alto (F#3 – G5)
4 – 6 Tenor (A2 – B4)
2 – 3 Baritone (G#2 – A4)
2 – 3 Bass (F#2 – G4)

If your song selection does not include these ranges, you will be vocalized to the extreme ends of the Required Range.
